Here’s one for fans of horror movies or liminal spaces in general. Backrooms, the major motion picture based on a concept that originated as an internet creepypasta, is up for preorder on Amazon on 4K UHD and Blu-ray. It's an A24 release, and it comes with six collectible postcards. It will be released on November 17.

Preoder Backrooms (4K UHD Blu-ray)

Backrooms stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, and Mark Duplass, and not many other people. It’s a spare film that moves slowly yet assuredly through its unsettling narrative. Ejiofor plays a down-on-his-luck furniture store manager who discovers that the basement of the store contains a portal into a strange, seemingly alternate world.

The portal leads to a seemingly endless string of connected yellow rooms and hallways, all lit by fluorescent lights and designed with weird and off-putting architecture. There are nooks and crannies where none should be, and half-walls and items from the outside world placed haphazardly in nonsensical locations. The rooms also seem to be home to a violent creature lurking in the shadows.

I watched it recently when it debuted on HBO, and I can attest it’s an unsettling movie that goes some very strange places. It was directed by Kane Parsons, and based partially on a series of YouTube videos he filmed and uploaded starting in 2022. This movie is Parsons’ directorial debut, and according to Wikipedia, “At age 20, Parsons became the youngest director to have a film debut at number one at both the domestic and global box offices, with Backrooms grossing over $400 million worldwide.”

In IGN’s Backrooms review, critic Lex Briscuso wrote, “Backrooms expertly expands on the conceptual groundwork of the YouTube series with smart visual composition, beautifully terrifying production design, a complex protagonist, and a return to Kane Parsons’ roots of computer generated sequences that pack a serious punch.”
