Jessica Chastain explained how she pulled off the terrifying facial expression she makes in the Other Mommy, saying that physical “pain” was a central part of getting her uncanny smile just right.

Chastain stars in Universal Pictures’ Other Mommy, where she plays both the mother of a young girl and the entity that haunts her family. It’s a Coraline-style premise that adds another horror film to her steadily-growing roster of projects in the genre (IT Chapter 2, Mama, Crimson Peak).

The big draw for this film is Chastain’s horrifying transformation from a caring mother to a bloodthirsty entity wearing her skin. Trailers for the movie show the acclaimed actress in both roles; when she plays the entity, she wears a dead-eyed expression with a wide, almost painful-looking smile.

It turns out that this smile does, indeed, channel some element of physical pain, as told by Chastain during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live where she explained how she came up with the entity’s distinct facial expression.

“I thought about this entity holding on the skin of a person, and maybe that’s the painful thing, like maybe you’re holding a box for a long time that’s very heavy. So the tension in your body, you have to hold this, and then, you have to smile, because you need a child to think you’re safe and approachable,” she said.

She then demonstrated the smile for the audience and even shed a tear right on cue. It was an impressive display of her acting ability, which Kimmel pointed out once her demo was done.

“I am a trained actress,” she joked. “You know what it is? I really felt the pain in my body, and that’s why, sometimes, you can see in the neck in the pictures — but then try to be as nice as possible. Don’t show your teeth.”

Thus far, early reviews for Other Mommy have been rather merciless; viewers who’ve seen it ahead of its October 9 theatrical release have called it “more silly than it is scary,” “truly dreadful,” and “masterfully cringe” on social media.

Viewers will have to judge for themselves when the film comes out tomorrow. For now, we can hope that Chastain’s impressive acting carries Other Mommy. That smile is certainly unsettling all on its own!
