Obsession director Curry Barker’s next film, Anything But Ghosts, is coming to theaters next year.
Anything But Ghosts comes to the silver screen on May 7, 2027. The film takes place in the same universe as Obsession, but is classified as a horror-comedy that follows a different cast of characters entirely — though they also go through some seriously spooky stuff.
Barker’s next flick stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Aaron Paul, Violet McGraw, Chris Reinache, and Cooper Tomlinson, who notably played Bear’s best friend, Ian, in Obsession, as well as Barker himself. Anything But Ghosts centers around two fake paranormal investigators who are finally confronted with some actual, real-life ghosts (or would that be ‘real-afterlife’ ghosts?), causing things to “spiral wildly and terrifyingly out of control,” as per an official press release.
Speaking on a June episode of Raiders of the Lost Podcast, Tomlinson confirmed that he and Curry are playing the two phony ghost hunters, and described the film as “if Key and Peele walked into Hereditary.”
“It’s a buddy comedy, you know, about these two guys, and it turns really scary,” he said. “You know, it’s about these con artist ghost hunters who encounter real ghosts, and then they have to step up and be the thing that they promised this family.”
Both Barker and Tomlinson are producing and co-writing the film, which is produced by Focus Features and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. Focus holds the movie’s worldwide rights, and Universal Pictures International is handling international distribution for the studio. This is the second time Focus and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster have worked together on a Curry Barker film; the two production houses also collaborated on Obsession, which released to rave reviews earlier this year.
Barker’s next offering has a lot to live up to; Obsession became one of the world's most profitable films compared to its budget in history, receiving critical acclaim and becoming an instant horror classic. Inde Navarrette’s standout performance as Nikki catapulted her to international fame, helping her land the role of Rogue in Marvel’s X-Men reboot, and put Barker in the hotseat for studios looking to get in on his future projects.
If you’ve ever watched Barker and Tomlinson’s humorous YouTube videos, you can safely assume that their delightful chemistry will get ample time to shine in Anything But Ghosts. With hard-hitters like Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul and Jurassic World’s Bryce Dallas Howard in the mix, there’s no telling what hijinks these two will get up to, but we can almost guarantee it’ll be hilarious. And given how creepy Obsession managed to be on such a small budget, it feels like the Hereditary-ness of it all might also give us a few good scares, too.
