If you're a Tolkien fan, you likely know that there's always more lore to discover. That's where the Silmarillion comes in. Unlike the other Lord of the Rings books that focus on narrative storytelling, the Silmarillion is a deep dive into the mythology and history that defines Middle Earth. It's an essential look into the fantasy world J.R.R. Tolkien so lovingly created.
The Silmarillion is available in multiple versions, but the illustrated editions offer the best overall experience thanks to maps, drawings, and more from Tolkien himself. If you're not already familiar with what the Silmarillion actually is, here's a quick rundown: This book covers the early history of its fictional universe, Eä, and the various lands it contains. This includes Valinor, Beleriand, Númenor, and, of course, Middle-Earth. Broken up into five distinct parts, readers can expect deep lore exposition, extensive historical accounts of the First Age, and summaries of the Third Age stories we know and love, the Lord of the Rings.
The illustrated edition itself is 432 pages long and includes the complete text of the Silmarillion alongside full-color prints of Tolkien's illustrations. It also includes two removable fold-out maps.

The Hobbit Illustrated Edition has also dropped to its lowest price ever. More premium "Deluxe" editions are currently on sale, but not at record-breaking prices. These prices are the best we've seen in 2026 so far, though, so it's worth picking up any of these editions if you're on the hunt for a good Lord of the Rings gift at a discount.
