In the latest patch for Marvel’s Wolverine, Insomniac has enabled the long-awaited option for players to choose whether or not they want to use the game’s visible scent trails by making it a togglable 'hint' option mapped to a button on their controller.
The update dropped on October 6 after months of complaints from critical players, who felt the scent trails were too hand-holdy and didn’t let them explore enough on their own.
On Twitter/X, Insomniac explained that their decision to make the scent trails optional was a direct result of community feedback. Now, players can choose whether or not they'd like the option to toggle them on or off by using a Hint button, which is mapped to R3 on the PlayStation 5 controller.
This also goes for other features like the visibility of audio cues and nightmare roots, allowing players to navigate the game's environment and come upon the Nightmare Cabin by themselves.
“Our latest update for Marvel’s #WolverinePS5 is live and adds a new ‘Hint’ toggle for story-related Scent trails based on community feedback!” Insomniac wrote. “With recent updates, you now have more control over the visibility of Scents, Audio Cues, and Nightmare Roots.”
Also included in this patch were fixes for “additional community-reported issues related to crashes and bugs.”
This latest update follows a similar change to scent trails that Insomniac made in late September, which gave players the option of turning off the scents for Whiskey Bottle scent trails, Material Crate Audio Clues, and Nightmare Door Roots. Prior to that, they toned down the scent trails' visibility to "make these visuals less intense" by reducing their overall opacity.
Insomniac has held true to its word of improving Wolverine as time goes by. On September 15, the developer issued a message to players, saying it was "actively engaged with our player community and gathering feedback to further refine the player experience."
These players have not been shy about sharing their feelings with Insomniac. Wolverine might be the developer's single most-debated game of all time, in large part due to elements like its scent trails and white paint that tell players where to go.
Even Wolverine's design was a hot topic of debate, with some feeling actor Liam McIntyre didn't fit the role of Marvel's iconic short king — but McIntyre said he wasn't fazed by the criticism at all, owing to his experience in taking on the mantle of Spartacus in the mid-2010s.
