I used to have that chunky red, blue, and green Lord of the Rings Extended Edition DVD boxed set. I loved that thing. I watched the whole trilogy a bunch of times over the years. But time marches on, and at some point I ditched all my DVDs. Now if I want to watch the series, I feel like I have to subscribe to HBO Max. Turns out I'm wrong. Right now, you can get The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition 3-Movie Bundle in 4K UHD digital on sale for $14.99. It normally runs $45, which makes this an excellent deal on a timeless classic movie trilogy.

What is there to say about these movies at this point? They were spectacular when they came out in the theater in December of each year from 2001 - 2003. They’re the best live-action adaptations of the books I could possibly imagine. They haven’t lost an ounce of their emotional power over the years. Even the CGI has held up incredibly well compared to lots of other movies of the time. Peter Jackson and the people at Wētā really knew what they were doing.

The LotR movies have been released in countless physical iterations since the early years of the millennium. But as we’ve shifted from VHS to DVD to Blu-ray to 4K Blu-ray, I’ve pretty much given up on maintaining a physical movie collection. I don’t want to keep re-buying my favorites every decade and having to get rid of the previous format. So I’ve gone digital.

I know all the pros of physical media, and I still buy a lot of video games in physical format. But movies are a different beast. And I figure these digital copies will stay relevant and in my collection for a long time to come. Plus, with digital you don’t have to get up off the couch to change discs.

It's not clear when this deal will go away, so grab it if you want it. And if you haven't given up on physical media, you have plenty of upcoming movies to peruse, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The End of Oak Street, and a whole lot more.
