The Anaheim Fan Fest for Final Fantasy XIV - the subscription-based MMO available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox Series X|S - delivered the game's next expansion announcement, sweeping system overhauls, and a Nintendo Switch 2 port, marking one of the densest single-event reveals the game has seen.

Berlin and Tokyo Fan Fests are still to come, with additional details reserved for each stop. What Anaheim delivered on its own was enough to reframe the game's trajectory heading into its 8.0 era.

Evercold and the Godless Realm Saga

The next expansion is titled Evercold, set inside a frozen realm and positioned as the start of a new narrative arc called The Godless Realm Saga. The story sends the Warrior of Light across shards into territory the series hasn't touched before. Concept art was shown, location names were kept vague, and a release window of January 2027 was confirmed - unusually early to lock in a date for an expansion that is still largely under wraps.

System Overhauls

  • Weekly progression: The daily tome-grinding system that has been in place for 13 years is being replaced by a weekly cadence. A new Adventurer Activity UI will track weekly missions and a progression bar, and is explicitly designed to give players a path to competitive gear outside of Savage raiding.
  • Item level sharing: Starting in 8.0, players will be able to reflect their highest item-level job onto other jobs, allowing far more flexibility when playing through content on alternate roles.
  • Reborn and Evolved job modes: All 21 combat jobs will receive two selectable modes. Reborn Mode preserves the current button layout; Evolved Mode trims button bloat and introduces reworked rotations and unique actions. The two-minute burst window that has defined raid optimization for years is confirmed gone when these modes launch. The design philosophy is shifting toward individual play expression and more varied fight design.
  • New raid difficulty: An intermediate tier harder than Normal but easier than Savage is coming to 8-person raids. Details are reserved for a later date.
  • Cross-world matchmaking: Data Center worlds will match with each other across all worlds within a region, and Party Finder will open to all players in a region. This change is arriving in a 7.5x patch.
  • Duty Support co-op: Players will be able to bring a friend into Duty Support content.

Character Customization, Jobs, and Collaborations

Character creation is getting a color picker for hair, eyes, and skin, along with improved eye, lip, and eye shadow options. Job action animations will become earnable cosmetic rewards, though specifics are held for the Berlin Fan Fest. The level cap for Evercold is confirmed at 110.

Two new jobs were teased: a tank job hinted at through an image of Rhitahtyn sas Arvina, and a Physical Ranged DPS job. The Alliance Raid for 8.0 is a crossover with Evangelion - titled Evangelion: Ghosts of Desire - framed as a 30th-anniversary celebration of the series, putting it in the same tier as past cross-media raids. A Nintendo Switch 2 port was also announced, requiring a separate game subscription but not a Nintendo Switch Online membership, with a test beginning one month before the official launch.

The scale of what is being touched simultaneously - job identity, progression cadence, matchmaking, character creation, and narrative direction - positions Evercold as the kind of structural reset the game hasn't attempted since A Realm Reborn. How the raid design philosophy holds up under Evolved Mode, and whether ending the two-minute meta disrupts parse culture or liberates it, will be the questions to track as Berlin and Tokyo fill in the gaps. In the meantime, high-end content continues ahead of Evercold to keep the current playerbase occupied.
