Donnie Darko will return to theaters – and in 4K – for its 25th anniversary.

Writer-director Richard Kelly’s 2001 cult classic will hit theaters nationwide on “Donnie Darko Day,” a three-day event running from October 2-October 4, 2026.

“In collaboration with American Cinematheque at the Aero Theatre and presented by Saga Arts, the special anniversary release also includes an exclusive introduction from Richard Kelly before the movie exploring the film’s enduring legacy and how it has captivated audiences for 25 years,” according to the official announcement.

Tickets are now available. Further details can be found at Fathom Entertainment’s site.

“Fathom Entertainment is thrilled to bring back Donnie Darko to theatres this fall for its 25th anniversary. This was not a film that exploded overnight - it found its audience slowly, and then never let go," said Shannah Miller, Vice President of Marketing at Fathom Entertainment.

Jake Gyllenhaal portrays the title character, who the 25th anniversary release announcement reminds us “doesn’t get along with his family, teachers or classmates, but he finds a kindred spirit in Gretchen and guidance from a compassionate psychiatrist who believes hypnosis may unlock hidden truths. Meanwhile, Donnie is haunted by Frank, a mysterious giant bunny only he can see. When a jet engine crashes into his bedroom and narrowly misses him, Donnie is drawn into a series of increasingly strange events that seem governed by forces beyond explanation.”

The movie boasts a stellar cast that also includes Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle, Mary McDonnell, Katharine Ross, and Seth Rogen.

IGN hailed Kelly’s film as “one of the most extraordinary directorial debuts in years, and a truly original, visionary piece of filmmaking” in our rave Donnie Darko review from 2001.

Kelly recently revealed that he’s written a Donnie Darko book sequel that will be published later this year.

Donnie Darko has made it onto several IGN lists over the years, including our picks for 10 mind-bending movies like Inception, the 15 best sci-fi movie soundtracks, the best movies that made the least money, and, yes, the 10 most famous movie rabbits.
