After years of it being rumored, Apple has finally revealed a foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, at the company's "Surprise and Shine" September event.
Unlike other foldables, such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold, the iPhone has the same aspect ratio in both folded and unfolded forms. When folded, the Duo has a 5.4-inch display – about the side of a passport – and unfolds to 7.6 inches. Both of these displays have a 1.4:1 aspect ratio – for context, that's in-between a 4:3 aspect ratio (equal to 1.34:1) and 16:9 (equal to 1.7:1).
Apple says it went with this format in order to maximize the usage of the larger, unfolded display. Most other foldables have a mostly-square shape when unfolded, which Apple points out wastes space to letterbox black bars when viewing traditional 16:9 content. The screen uses wide-angle OLEDs, and has a 3000 nit peak brightness.
As with practically every foldable announcement in history, Apple says that it worked hard on eliminating the crease, and while we'll have to wait until we get our hands on it to say for sure, it seems like the company was successful. The iPhone Duo uses what Apple is calling a "nano-texture display," to maintain optimal screen-feel while doing what it needs to do in order to not have a visable crease. When unfolded, Apple says the Duo is the thinnest iPhone ever.
Powering this Foldable iPhone is Apple's new A20 Pro chipset, the same found in the iPhone 18 Pro. With other foldables with flagship chipsets, you typically see slightly slower performance, especially in sustained workloads, because the phone ironically has less space to cool the chip. The iPhone Duo meanwhile utilizes a vapor chamber cooling system, but we'll have to wait for hands-on testing before passing judgement on how well it keeps things cool. More importantly, the A20 Pro chip is going to power both the internal and external display simultaneously, which means that there'll be essentially zero delay when swapping between screens.
The UI has been completely redesigned for the iPhone Duo, with primary controls and the dynamic island moved to the side of the screen. This should make things easier to access and activate when holding the phone in one hand. Meanwhile that aspect ratio mentioned above will give you more space to watch videos and play games, meaning the iPhone Duo has a shot at becoming the best foldable for gaming.
Apple showed off a variety of interesting use-cases for the iPhone Duo. Standby mode works well here, as you can prop up a semi-folded Duo on your nightstand to serve as a bedside clock and alarm.
The camera system also gets some neat tricks. You can have the outer display preview the image, so your subject can see how your framing looks before the photo is taken – surely a boon for hapless Instagram partners everywhere. There's also a cool feature that lets you display a captivating animation, such as a clip of Snoopy dancing, in order to draw the attention of a child towards the camera. Meanwhile, Duo Facetime uses both the internal and external screens and cameras to let people on both sides of the device join a face time call instead of having to crowd around a small screen and camera.
As for the camera itself, the main sensor is the same 48MP shooter as the iPhone 18 Pro, though it lacks the physical aperture shutter of that phone. Meanwhile, the internal camera is 12MP and sits under the display, remaining hidden until you need it.
Battery life is always a challenge on foldables, but Apple claims the iPhone Duo will be capable of "all-day" usage. That's an impressive claim, and one we'll surely be testing when we go hands-on with the device.
The iPhone Duo will be available in Night Sky (dark grey) and Star White colorways, and starts at $1,999 for 256GB of storage, which is $100 less than the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Preorders start on October 16, with the phone hitting store shelves on October 23.
