Want to play Ranger in Aion 2 and be the best player in your group?
This Aion 2 Ranger guide gathers the whole build, step by step: playstyle, specialization of every skill, passives, stigmas, target stats, gear, Arcanas, Genus Insight, Daevanion and macro.
Important
This guide is 100% PvE. The Ranger PvP build is coming soon to the site.
The Ranger is the archer of Aion 2: a ranged class that fires nonstop. Its strength is the number of hits it lands per minute.
Strengths
Things to know before you start:
Each skill has 5 specialization lines, identified by a color: green, blue, yellow, orange and red. They unlock with the skill level.
How do you get a main skill to level 20? You add up 4 sources:
Remember this rule: 4 points from Daevanion, 4 points from Arcanas, 2 points from gear. It applies to the 4 main skills: Deadshot, Gale Arrow, Snare Shot and Drill Dart.
For each skill, here are the specializations to activate at the recommended level. The colored dot shows the matching line in game.
The Ranger runs 4 skills at level 20, 3 skills at level 16, and the rest between 8 and 12.
Your biggest hit. It is a charged skill (3 charge stages). It hits 35% harder while you are under the effect of Marking Shot.
Lv. 20
+30% Skill Speed
Ignores Block and Evasion, Multi-Hit
Bonus damage on hit
This is the strongest version. The orange line is essential: without it, the bonus damage from the red line does not benefit from Multi-Hit.
Tip Without the yellow line, you stand still while charging. Not comfortable with that? Take blue, yellow and red: the damage loss is small, and it beats dying mid-charge.
The Ranger’s damage buff. For 10 s, it increases your Combat Speed and PvE Damage Boost. The fewer targets it hits, the stronger the bonus.
Lv. 20
Usable while moving
Combat Speed and PvE Damage Boost (few targets)
-10 s CD
It slows the targets it hits. Burst Arrow and Explosive Arrow hit much harder on a slowed target.

Chains into Shackling Arrow
Why level 20? For Shackling Arrow, the follow-up unlocked by the orange line. It hits rarely (about 13 times per minute) but makes up about 3% of your damage, without lowering the hit count of your other skills. Since the gap between skills was reduced, its animation costs almost nothing.
It triggers on critical hits and makes targets bleed. A major source of damage.
Lv. 20
Absorbs 3% HP
Guaranteed Multi-Hit
+1 activation
The basic attack of the rotation. Each hit reduces Deadshot’s cooldown. Raise it to level 16.
Lv. 16
-1 s Deadshot CD
Chains into Tempest Arrow
Level 20 adds almost nothing. Those points are far better spent on Focused Eye and Hunter’s Resolve (see passives).
Raise it to level 16.
Lv. 16
+12% damage (few targets)
+20% Skill Speed
Only usable on a staggered target (empty stagger gauge). It hits harder than Snipe. Raise it to level 16.
Lv. 16
Guaranteed Multi-Hit
-1 s CD on all skills
Tip
Is the boss staggered? Press Arrow Scattershot instead of Snipe while keeping the in-game macro held down: it replaces Snipe in the rotation. More damage, and the red line brings your buffs back sooner. Very rewarding on bosses that get staggered often.
It only hits slowed or rooted targets: Snare Shot sets them up. Level 12 is enough.
Lv. 12
Usable while moving
+20% damage (few targets)
It puts you in a precision state for 15 s: Critical Hit +300, Perfect Chance +5%, and Deadshot +35%. Level 12 minimum.
Lv. 12
+5% Perfect Chance
+5 s duration
Recast it manually every 15 s: it does not go into the macro.
Almost never used in boss fights: level 8 is enough. If it is already level 12:
Lv. 12
Pulls enemies in
Bonus damage after 3 s
It frees you from crowd control (stun, knockdown…).
Lv. 12

Lv. 16
+20% HP on use
+50% PvE Damage Tolerance during Tenacity
Note
Suppressing Arrow is useless in PvE: do not put any points into it.
For the Ranger, two passives crush all the others: Focused Eye and Hunter’s Resolve.
Focused Eye and Hunter’s Resolve come before skills. Raising Snipe or Burst Arrow to level 20 costs points that are far more useful on these two passives.
Stigmas are special skills that boost your character. Each stigma gains a line every 5 levels (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25).
Priority for level 25:
Do boss fights last less than 20 s in your group? Replace Bow of Blessing with Explosive Arrow (recommended) or Griffon Arrow. Otherwise, keep Bow of Blessing: its bonuses are much stronger in a normal fight.
The #1 stigma. It increases your Attack, Perfect Chance and Weapon Damage Boost for its duration. Every line is useful.

One slot remains free. Three options, depending on your taste and the content:
Warning
Illusory Arrow and Mother Nature’s Breath never go into the skill chain. Their animation is long: cast them manually.
Why hold the front position? If you invest in Front Damage Boost, every shot fired outside the front of the boss loses that bonus. Hence the value of Ambush Kick.
As with almost every class, Attack comes first. Look for plenty of Might: this stat increases your Attack by a percentage (Attack Increase).
Then, 4 divine stats make the difference:
Where to find them? On Pantheon artworks and Abyss bracelets.
These two stats multiply damage dealt from the front or from behind. Pick one and invest heavily in it.
The Ranger almost always shoots facing the boss. Every point of Front Damage Boost therefore benefits almost all of its hits: it is the natural choice.
Value of each stat for a Ranger hitting from the front 80% of the time (baseline 1 = Front Damage Boost):
Combat Speed works in thresholds for the Ranger. Aim for 88.1% with the Gale Arrow buff active.
Benchmarks for the current sanctuaries:
These values include group buffs and consumables. Block Penetration counts as Accuracy against bosses: add it to the total.
Tip
Brooches are the best source of Accuracy and Critical Hit. Their Precision, Accuracy, Critical Hit and Block Penetration lines quickly fill a gap. Also playing PvP? Keep separate brooches for PvE.
The target gear is the Splendent Ebony Dragon Lord crafted set, the most expensive in the game. Every piece is at max enhancement (+20) with max potential.
Every piece has random stats: Soul Binding. On armor and accessories, 2 passives always come back: Focused Eye and Hunter’s Resolve.
In the table, passives are in purple and active skills in blue.
Note The Philosopher’s Stone does not exist yet on the global version. It will come to the European version, with no known date. Treat it as a future option.
Important
Critical Hit before Accuracy. Bow of Blessing converts part of your Critical Hit into Attack: every crit line is worth more than it looks. Only take Accuracy if you lack it (see the benchmarks).
See every possible Soul Binding stat per gear piece (image)
On Superior Manastones, aim for the Ultimate tier:
No Ultimate line? The best alternative is Attack +10.
Important
Front (or Back) Damage Boost beats everything. It takes about 2 lines of Weapon Damage Boost, or 3 lines of Critical Damage Boost, to match a single line of Front Damage Boost.
The differences between Theostones are small. The best option: any Theostone with a 1% chance to deal big single-target damage (fire, water, wind or earth, it does not matter).
The Ranger hits a lot, so that 1% triggers very often. Example: Traufnir’s Courage, 1% chance to deal 10,000 fire damage.
Arcanas give a divine stat and skill or passive levels. The goal: +4 on every main skill and as much as possible on Focused Eye and Hunter’s Resolve. All cards are +5.
What matters is the final result. You can spread your points however you like across cards.
Two choices, depending on your goal:
Note
Front Damage Boost build: if you get wings with Front Damage Boost, max Attack and Multi-Hit, take them. That is what gives the Front build its edge over the Back build, which remains safer to play since you hit from behind the boss.
Genus Insight is filled family by family (Cogni, Fera, Natura, Varian and Special). Each family has 9 slots, with the same pattern:
Tip
Double Chance and Front Damage Boost are the most valuable lines for the Ranger. When the game offers them, keep a ratio of about 7 Double Chance for 3 Front Damage Boost. Up to 5 for 5 if you really hold the front position.
Note
Which Attack is worth the most? Plain Attack first, then max Attack, then additional Attack. Conditional Attack (front, back, boss, PvE) comes after.
For artworks, always aim for the same 4 stats: Wisdom, Destruction, Time and Illusion. Life and the other stats are not a priority.
For the Ranger, Illusion and Wisdom come first:
For statues, use what you have. Kromede and Zikel statues are the priority for the stats they give.
Daevanion tops up your skill levels. Take every gold node: these are the +4 on main skills and key passives.
The rule is simple: take every skill and every passive. Start with the 4 main skills, Focused Eye and Hunter’s Resolve.
Tip With the full build (Daevanion, Arcanas and gear), Focused Eye reaches around level 35 and Hunter’s Resolve around 33.
The skill chain is arranged in 3 lines. In each line, the game casts the first available skill: order matters.
Never put Snipe or Mother Nature’s Breath in a line. You would lose damage. Snipe goes on its own, at the end of the in-game macro.
The in-game macro repeats the lines in this order (10 ms delay between each):
The Ranger is played with 3 held buttons:
Turn on the game’s Skill Queue option for this playstyle.
Tip
Mouse example: left click = Snipe, right click = in-game macro, R button = Deadshot, side button = Marking Shot. You can also bundle the first 3 into a single mouse macro button.
Hit a training dummy for 1 minute and compare with these benchmarks:
A more advanced version exists. It brings about 5% more DPS and goes over 1,000 hits per minute on a training dummy.
Warning
For very well-geared players. You need very advanced gear, a mouse macro and a solid PC: on a weaker setup, your hit count can drop. Tested in dungeons, not guaranteed on Abyss field bosses.
The 3 steps:
The mouse macro, in 2 parts:
More details on macros in the Aion 2 Bible.
The Ranger is a formidable ranged class: a hail of hits, and the best use of Front Damage Boost in the game.
Key takeaways:
Deadshot, Gale Arrow, Snare Shot and Drill Dart. These are the 4 skills to raise to level 20. Snipe, Tempest Shot and Arrow Scattershot follow at level 16.
Vaizel’s Authority, Supporting Fire and Bow of Blessing first. Complete with Explosive Arrow, then Griffon Arrow.
88.1% with the Gale Arrow buff active. The advanced build aims for about 121.6%.
The Ranger shoots from the front, at range. Almost all of its hits benefit from Front Damage Boost. It is its most profitable stat.
Start from base level 10. Add +4 from Daevanion, +4 from Arcanas and +2 from rings.

Introduction: the Ranger playstyle
Want to play Ranger in Aion 2 and be the best player in your group?
This Aion 2 Ranger guide gathers the whole build, step by step: playstyle, specialization of every skill, passives, stigmas, target stats, gear, Arcanas, Genus Insight, Daevanion and macro.
Important
This guide is 100% PvE. The Ranger PvP build is coming soon to the site.
The Ranger is the archer of Aion 2: a ranged class that fires nonstop. Its strength is the number of hits it lands per minute.
Strengths
- +Ranged attacks
- +Shoots while moving, excellent positioning
- +Can keep hitting during mechanics
- +Huge number of hits per minute
- +The best class to make use of Front Damage Boost
- −Highly dependent on Combat Speed
- −Rotation with 3 held buttons, often handed to a mouse macro
- −Sensitive to lag and PC performance
Things to know before you start:
- Front or Back Damage Boost: you have to pick one. Investing in neither easily costs you 20% DPS. The Ranger shoots from range, facing the boss: it is the ranged class that benefits most from Front Damage Boost.
- Hits from your main skills matter more than anything. Critical, Double or Perfect make damage swing from one test to the next. What makes the difference is how often your big skills fire. On a training dummy, aim for more than 910 hits in 1 minute (see the benchmarks).
- Some thresholds are mandatory. Several skills only become truly effective at a specific level. Details are in each card below.
Understanding specializations
Each skill has 5 specialization lines, identified by a color: green, blue, yellow, orange and red. They unlock with the skill level.
- Level 8: lines 1 to 3, 1 specialization
- Level 12: 4th line, 2 specializations
- Level 16: 5th line unlocked
- Level 20: 3 specializations
How do you get a main skill to level 20? You add up 4 sources:
| Source | Levels gained |
|---|---|
| Base level | 10 |
| Daevanion | +4 |
| Arcanas | +4 |
| Gear (rings) | +2 |
| Total | 20 |
Remember this rule: 4 points from Daevanion, 4 points from Arcanas, 2 points from gear. It applies to the 4 main skills: Deadshot, Gale Arrow, Snare Shot and Drill Dart.
Active skills
For each skill, here are the specializations to activate at the recommended level. The colored dot shows the matching line in game.
The Ranger runs 4 skills at level 20, 3 skills at level 16, and the rest between 8 and 12.
DeadshotMain skill
Your biggest hit. It is a charged skill (3 charge stages). It hits 35% harder while you are under the effect of Marking Shot.
Lv. 20
Gale ArrowMain skill
The Ranger’s damage buff. For 10 s, it increases your Combat Speed and PvE Damage Boost. The fewer targets it hits, the stronger the bonus.
Lv. 20
Snare ShotMain skill
It slows the targets it hits. Burst Arrow and Explosive Arrow hit much harder on a slowed target.
Lv. 20
Why level 20? For Shackling Arrow, the follow-up unlocked by the orange line. It hits rarely (about 13 times per minute) but makes up about 3% of your damage, without lowering the hit count of your other skills. Since the gap between skills was reduced, its animation costs almost nothing.
- Keep the yellow line. Snare Shot comes back about every 5 s thanks to Vaizel’s Authority: stopping every time would be unbearable.
- Not level 20 yet? Take blue and yellow.
Drill DartMain skill
It triggers on critical hits and makes targets bleed. A major source of damage.
Lv. 20
- Orange and red are mandatory, hence level 20.
- Life steal (green) lets you tank light damage without stopping your fire. In a group, healers cannot cover everything: this line makes a huge difference for survival.
- The yellow line (+20% Skill Speed) has no visible effect with a standard Combat Speed. It only becomes useful with the advanced build.
Snipe
The basic attack of the rotation. Each hit reduces Deadshot’s cooldown. Raise it to level 16.
Lv. 16
Level 20 adds almost nothing. Those points are far better spent on Focused Eye and Hunter’s Resolve (see passives).
Tempest Shot
Raise it to level 16.
Lv. 16
Arrow Scattershot
Only usable on a staggered target (empty stagger gauge). It hits harder than Snipe. Raise it to level 16.
Lv. 16
Tip
Is the boss staggered? Press Arrow Scattershot instead of Snipe while keeping the in-game macro held down: it replaces Snipe in the rotation. More damage, and the red line brings your buffs back sooner. Very rewarding on bosses that get staggered often.
Burst Arrow
It only hits slowed or rooted targets: Snare Shot sets them up. Level 12 is enough.
Lv. 12
- The yellow line is mandatory.
- Healing too tight in your group? Swap orange for green (absorbs 10% HP).
- Level 20 is not worth it: the points would be missing from Focused Eye and Hunter’s Resolve.
Marking Shot
It puts you in a precision state for 15 s: Critical Hit +300, Perfect Chance +5%, and Deadshot +35%. Level 12 minimum.
Lv. 12
Recast it manually every 15 s: it does not go into the macro.
Explosion Trap
Almost never used in boss fights: level 8 is enough. If it is already level 12:
Lv. 12
Defiance
It frees you from crowd control (stun, knockdown…).
Lv. 12
Lv. 16
Note
Suppressing Arrow is useless in PvE: do not put any points into it.
Passives
For the Ranger, two passives crush all the others: Focused Eye and Hunter’s Resolve.
| Tier | Passive | What it gives |
|---|---|---|
| 0 |
| Accuracy, PvE Damage Boost and Double Chance. The #1 passive. |
| 0 |
| Big Critical Damage Boost bonus |
| 1 |
| Extra hits. The 2nd best offensive passive |
| 1 |
| Stamina, and movement speed when you get hit |
| 1 |
| Small gain per level, but boosted by Vaizel’s Authority |
| 2 |
| More max HP. Useful, without overdoing it |
| 3 |
| Decent, but not a priority |
| PvP |
| Useless in pure PvE: take your points out |
- The goal: Focused Eye + Hunter’s Resolve above 67 combined levels. The maximum possible is 69.
- Why does it matter so much? Each level of Focused Eye gives 1% PvE Damage Boost (1.5% under Vaizel’s Authority) and 0.3% Double Chance. A Ranger at 60 combined levels is 9 levels behind the maximum: that is more than a strong damage consumable.
- Wind Vigor trick: low-damage ground zones speed you up when they touch you. Let them graze you to gain speed, without taking real risks.
- Also playing PvP? Keep points in Unyielding Resolve and Revitalization Contract.
Focused Eye and Hunter’s Resolve come before skills. Raising Snipe or Burst Arrow to level 20 costs points that are far more useful on these two passives.
Stigmas
Stigmas are special skills that boost your character. Each stigma gains a line every 5 levels (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25).
Priority for level 25:
- Vaizel’s Authority
- Supporting Fire
- Bow of Blessing
- Explosive Arrow
- Griffon Arrow
- Supporting Fire comes before Bow of Blessing. On an alt, raise Vaizel’s Authority and Supporting Fire first.
- The Vaizel’s Authority, Supporting Fire, Bow of Blessing trio is the best in almost every case.
Do boss fights last less than 20 s in your group? Replace Bow of Blessing with Explosive Arrow (recommended) or Griffon Arrow. Otherwise, keep Bow of Blessing: its bonuses are much stronger in a normal fight.
Vaizel’s Authority
The #1 stigma. It increases your Attack, Perfect Chance and Weapon Damage Boost for its duration. Every line is useful.
Lv. 5
+10% Perfect Chance for the duration
Lv. 10
Focused Eye effect ×1.5 for the duration
Lv. 15
Hunter’s Soul effect ×1.5 for the duration
Lv. 20
50% chance of -1 s CD on all skills on critical hit
Lv. 25
+10% Weapon Damage Boost for the duration
Supporting Fire
It summons a sphere that shoots alongside you for 30 s.
Lv. 5
+25% activation chance
Lv. 10
+15 s duration
Lv. 15
-30 s CD
Lv. 20

Bow of Blessing
A big damage buff: Attack based on your Critical Hit, Critical Hit, Accuracy and Double Chance.
Lv. 5
+50% Multi-Hit Chance for the duration
Lv. 10
Attack increased based on your Critical Hit
Lv. 15
+20% Critical Damage Boost for the duration
Lv. 20

Lv. 25

Explosive Arrow
A shot that always crits, much stronger on a slowed or rooted target (thanks, Snare Shot).
Lv. 5
-15 s CD
Lv. 10
+10% damage on slowed or rooted targets
Lv. 15

Lv. 10
+5 s damage over time
Lv. 15
Bonus damage on a burning target
Lv. 20

The last slot (your choice)
One slot remains free. Three options, depending on your taste and the content:
| Stigma | When to take it |
|---|---|
| To quickly get back in front of the boss (it turns, you lose the right angle). It also breaks some boss attacks. Very handy on Abyss field bosses |
| The best for damage. At level 20 it has 2 charges: fire it manually, only when both charges are ready |
| The defensive option |
Illusory Arrow and Mother Nature’s Breath never go into the skill chain. Their animation is long: cast them manually.
Why hold the front position? If you invest in Front Damage Boost, every shot fired outside the front of the boss loses that bonus. Hence the value of Ambush Kick.
Target stats
As with almost every class, Attack comes first. Look for plenty of Might: this stat increases your Attack by a percentage (Attack Increase).
Then, 4 divine stats make the difference:
- Destruction [Zikel]: increases Attack.
- Wisdom [Lumiel]: increases Double Chance.
- Time [Siel]: increases Combat Speed.
- Illusion [Kaisinel]: reduces cooldowns, so your buffs come back more often.
Where to find them? On Pantheon artworks and Abyss bracelets.
Front or Back Damage Boost: the key stat
These two stats multiply damage dealt from the front or from behind. Pick one and invest heavily in it.
The Ranger almost always shoots facing the boss. Every point of Front Damage Boost therefore benefits almost all of its hits: it is the natural choice.
Value of each stat for a Ranger hitting from the front 80% of the time (baseline 1 = Front Damage Boost):
| Stat (+0.6%) | Relative value |
|---|---|
| Front Damage Boost | 1 |
| Weapon Damage Boost | 0.41 (about 30 to 35 Attack) |
| Critical Damage Boost | 0.31 |
| Damage Boost | 0.24 |
| Boss Damage Boost | 0.24 |
- Goal: 30% or more in the stat you picked.
- To aim for the top of the rankings: 35% Front Damage Boost, or 33% Back Damage Boost.
Combat Speed: the 88.1% threshold
Combat Speed works in thresholds for the Ranger. Aim for 88.1% with the Gale Arrow buff active.
- Below this threshold, you lose shots every cycle.
- You usually need one Time [Siel] line on a bracelet to reach it.
- The next threshold is around 135%. You only reach it briefly, with group buffs and a Combat Speed scroll.
- To go further, see the advanced build.
Accuracy and Critical Hit
Benchmarks for the current sanctuaries:
| Stat | Benchmark |
|---|---|
| Accuracy | 2,600 or more |
| Critical Hit | 3,150 or more |
These values include group buffs and consumables.
Late game gear
Warning This gear is a very late game goal. It is not meant for early server progression. The target gear is the Splendent Ebony Dragon Lord crafted set, the most expensive in the game. Every piece is at max enhancement (+20) with max potential.
The golden rule of Soul Binding
Every piece has random stats: Soul Binding. On armor and accessories, 2 passives always come back: Focused Eye and Hunter’s Resolve.
In the table, passives are in purple and active skills in blue.
Note The Philosopher’s Stone does not exist yet on the global version. It will come to the European version, with no known date. Treat it as a future option.
Soul Binding by gear piece
| Piece | Mandatory lines | Your choice | Philosopher’s Stone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bow (weapon) | Combat Speed, Damage Boost, Weapon Damage Boost, Multi-hit Chance, Might | – | Attack |
| Guard (off-hand) | Combat Speed, Damage Boost, Weapon Damage Boost, Multi-hit Chance, Might | – | Attack |
| Helmet | Double Chance, Attack Increase, Focused Eye, Hunter’s Resolve | Attack, then Critical Hit (or Accuracy) | Attack or Accuracy |
| Shoulders | Critical Damage Boost, Double Chance, Focused Eye, Hunter’s Resolve | Attack, then Critical Hit (or Accuracy) | Attack or Accuracy |
| Chest | Damage Boost, Focused Eye, Hunter’s Resolve | Attack, then Critical Hit (or Accuracy) | Attack or Accuracy |
| Pants | Attack Increase, Focused Eye, Hunter’s Resolve | Attack, then Critical Hit (or Accuracy) | Attack or Accuracy |
| Gloves | Combat Speed, Focused Eye, Hunter’s Resolve | Attack, then Critical Hit (or Accuracy) | Attack or Accuracy |
| Cape | Double Chance, Attack Increase, Focused Eye, Hunter’s Resolve | Attack, then Critical Hit (or Accuracy) | Attack or Accuracy |
| Boots | Movement Speed, Focused Eye, Hunter’s Resolve | Attack, then Critical Hit (or Accuracy) | Attack or Accuracy |
| Earrings (×2) | Movement Speed, Might, Focused Eye, Hunter’s Resolve | Attack, then Critical Hit (or Accuracy) | Attack or Accuracy |
| Necklace | Combat Speed, Might, Focused Eye, Hunter’s Resolve | Attack, then Critical Hit (or Accuracy) | Attack or Accuracy |
| Rings (×2) | Might, Deadshot, Gale Arrow, Snare Shot, Drill Dart | Tempest Shot (ring 1), Snipe (ring 2) | Attack |
| Abyss bracelets (×2) | Time [Siel] (at least 1 line), Illusion [Kaisinel], Destruction [Zikel], Wisdom [Lumiel], Justice [Nezekan] | 1 line among Space [Israphel] (Movement Speed), Death [Triniel] (Critical Hit) or Freedom [Vaizel] (Accuracy) | – |
Critical Hit before Accuracy. Bow of Blessing converts part of your Critical Hit into Attack: every crit line is worth more than it looks. Only take Accuracy if you lack it (see the benchmarks).
- The Attack line: never remove it from a piece.
- Earrings: Hunter’s Soul or Concentrated Fire as a bonus line bring almost nothing. No need to chase them.
- Rings: the 4 main skills on both rings. The last line tops up Tempest Shot and Snipe to reach level 16.
- Bracelets: at least one Time [Siel] line, essential for the Combat Speed threshold. For the free line: Death or Freedom if you lack Critical Hit or Accuracy. Otherwise, Space: more movement speed is a real plus for a Ranger who shoots on the move.
- Amulet and belt: not very important.
See every possible Soul Binding stat per gear piece (image)
Manastones
On Superior Manastones, aim for the Ultimate tier:
- Front Attack Damage Boost +100 (or Back, depending on your choice), first
- Weapon Damage Boost +100
- Critical Damage Boost +100
- Damage Boost +100
No Ultimate line? The best alternative is Attack +10.
Important
Front (or Back) Damage Boost beats everything. It takes about 2 lines of Weapon Damage Boost, or 3 lines of Critical Damage Boost, to match a single line of Front Damage Boost.
Theostones
The differences between Theostones are small. The best option: any Theostone with a 1% chance to deal big single-target damage (fire, water, wind or earth, it does not matter).
The Ranger hits a lot, so that 1% triggers very often. Example: Traufnir’s Courage, 1% chance to deal 10,000 fire damage.
- Avoid 20% chance Theostones: they inflate your hit count, but their damage is too low.
- Yellow if possible, blue otherwise.
Arcanas
Arcanas give a divine stat and skill or passive levels. The goal: +4 on every main skill and as much as possible on Focused Eye and Hunter’s Resolve. All cards are +5.
Optimization example
What matters is the final result. You can spread your points however you like across cards.
| Card | Divine stat | Sub-skills |
|---|---|---|
| Parchment of Vigor | Life [Yustiel] | Snare Shot 4, Drill Dart 3, Snipe 1, Tempest Shot 1 |
| Compass of Magic | Death [Triniel] or Freedom [Vaizel], depending on your needs | Gale Arrow 3, Deadshot 3, Arrow Scattershot 2, Marking Shot 1 |
| Chalice of Vigor (Grail) | Time [Siel] | Drill Dart 1, Gale Arrow 1, Deadshot 1, Focused Eye or Hunter’s Resolve for the rest |
| Bell of Magic | Destruction [Zikel] | Hunter’s Resolve maxed, the rest free |
| Mirror of Magic | Wisdom [Lumiel] | Focused Eye maxed, the rest free |
- Result: +4 on Deadshot, Gale Arrow, Snare Shot and Drill Dart. With the rings, Snipe and Tempest Shot reach level 16.
- Arrow Scattershot: +2 is enough for level 16. No ring needed.
- Mirror and Bell: everything left goes into Focused Eye and Hunter’s Resolve.
Wings
Two choices, depending on your goal:
| Wings | Main effect (equipped) |
|---|---|
| Forest Spirit Wings | Boss Damage Boost and Boss Attack |
| Dark Veil Wings | Damage Boost and Attack Bonus |
Front Damage Boost build: if you get wings with Front Damage Boost, max Attack and Multi-Hit, take them. That is what gives the Front build its edge over the Back build, which remains safer to play since you hit from behind the boss.
Genus Insight
Genus Insight is filled family by family (Cogni, Fera, Natura, Varian and Special). Each family has 9 slots, with the same pattern:
| Slot | Stat to take |
|---|---|
| 1 | Attack Bonus (otherwise Critical Attack or PvE Attack) |
| 2 | HP increase |
| 3 | Accuracy if you lack it, otherwise Critical Hit |
| 4 | PvE Damage Boost, Damage Boost or Critical Damage Boost. Special only: Double Chance |
| 5 | Attack Bonus (otherwise Critical Attack or PvE Attack) |
| 6 | Accuracy or Critical Hit |
| 7 | Critical Hit |
| 8 | HP increase |
| 9 | Accuracy or Critical Hit |
Double Chance and Front Damage Boost are the most valuable lines for the Ranger. When the game offers them, keep a ratio of about 7 Double Chance for 3 Front Damage Boost. Up to 5 for 5 if you really hold the front position.
Note
Which Attack is worth the most? Plain Attack first, then max Attack, then additional Attack. Conditional Attack (front, back, boss, PvE) comes after.
Pantheon
For artworks, always aim for the same 4 stats: Wisdom, Destruction, Time and Illusion. Life and the other stats are not a priority.
For the Ranger, Illusion and Wisdom come first:
- Illusion: every Ranger skill has a cooldown, and Vaizel’s Authority reduces them further. Every point of cooldown reduction counts.
- Goal: 33% cooldown reduction or more.
- Artworks: take the ones with Illusion and Wisdom together. A blue artwork with both beats a yellow one with only one of them.
For statues, use what you have. Kromede and Zikel statues are the priority for the stats they give.
Daevanion
Daevanion tops up your skill levels. Take every gold node: these are the +4 on main skills and key passives.
The rule is simple: take every skill and every passive. Start with the 4 main skills, Focused Eye and Hunter’s Resolve.
| Skill | Target Daevanion bonus |
|---|---|
| All active skills | +4 |
| All passives | +4 |
Rotation and macro
The skill chain
The skill chain is arranged in 3 lines. In each line, the game casts the first available skill: order matters.
- Gale Arrow line: Gale Arrow, Griffon Arrow, Snare Shot, then Explosive Arrow.
- Drill Dart line: Drill Dart, Burst Arrow, then Tempest Shot.
- Buff line: Vaizel’s Authority, Supporting Fire, then Bow of Blessing.
Never put Snipe or Mother Nature’s Breath in a line. You would lose damage. Snipe goes on its own, at the end of the in-game macro.
- Tempest Shot always at the bottom of its line. In its own line, it inflates your hit count, but stronger skills (Drill Dart first) fire less often. Result: less real damage in dungeons.
- Buffs: automatic in the chain works fine for most dungeons. To chase the best score, cast them manually at the right time.
The in-game macro
The in-game macro repeats the lines in this order (10 ms delay between each):
- Gale Arrow line
- Drill Dart line
- Buff line (Vaizel’s Authority)
- Snipe
The rotation
The Ranger is played with 3 held buttons:
- Hold Snipe: it is the basic attack, and it reduces Deadshot’s cooldown.
- Hold the in-game macro key: it casts your skills as soon as they are ready.
- Deadshot: press, then release as soon as it is ready. Without the « while moving » line, you stand still while charging: release to dodge when an attack comes.
- Every 15 s: recast Marking Shot manually.
Turn on the game’s Skill Queue option for this playstyle.
Tip
Mouse example: left click = Snipe, right click = in-game macro, R button = Deadshot, side button = Marking Shot. You can also bundle the first 3 into a single mouse macro button.
- Very long boss fight: release and press again once in a while, otherwise the game shows a warning.
- Abyss field bosses: stick to the in-game macro. Mouse macros sometimes get ignored there because of lag.
Check on a training dummy
Hit a training dummy for 1 minute and compare with these benchmarks:
| Measure | Benchmark |
|---|---|
| Total hits | 910 or more (about 935 with this build) |
| Deadshot | 24 to 26 hits |
| Tempest Shot | 260 to 270 hits |
| Drill Dart | 70 hits or more |
| Snare Shot and Shackling Arrow | about 13 hits |
| Gale Arrow | 19 to 20 hits |
| Marking Shot | 4 (one every 15 s) |
- Before testing: cast all your buffs, then Marking Shot, then attack with your 3 buttons.
- Look at hits, not DPS. DPS varies a lot between tests (crits, Deadshot Doubles). The hit count of your main skills is reliable.
- Tempest Shot at 300 hits or more? That is too much: it steals the place of stronger skills. Check that it is at the bottom of its line.
The advanced build (+5% DPS)
A more advanced version exists. It brings about 5% more DPS and goes over 1,000 hits per minute on a training dummy.
Warning
For very well-geared players. You need very advanced gear, a mouse macro and a solid PC: on a weaker setup, your hit count can drop. Tested in dungeons, not guaranteed on Abyss field bosses.
The 3 steps:
- Raise Combat Speed to about 121.6%, Gale Arrow buff included (instead of 88.1%). At 118%, the threshold is not reached. You need a +20 necklace, a Dragon Lord weapon and Guard, and two Time [Siel] lines on your bracelets. Missing a little? The best Combat Speed scroll can close the gap.
- Take the +20% Skill Speed line on Snare Shot (already taken) and on Drill Dart (yellow line, instead of green). Both skills must be level 20.
- Turn off Skill Queue and use a mouse macro. On keyboard only, you have to mash the keys very fast (a turbo mode can help).
The mouse macro, in 2 parts:
| Moment | Keys |
|---|---|
| On press | Snipe, 10 ms, Deadshot, 350 ms, in-game macro |
| While held | Gale Arrow line and buff line on loop (6 to 13 ms between each) |
- In short: Snipe held (optional) + in-game macro held + Gale Arrow line and buff line mashed.
- Delays: adjust them to your PC.
- Variant: Deadshot can leave the macro. In that case, put it on a separate button, pressed manually. If you keep it in the macro, take its « while moving » line.
More details on macros in the Aion 2 Bible.
Conclusion
The Ranger is a formidable ranged class: a hail of hits, and the best use of Front Damage Boost in the game.
Key takeaways:
- Deadshot, Gale Arrow, Snare Shot and Drill Dart at level 20.
- Focused Eye and Hunter’s Resolve above all: more than 67 combined levels.
- Vaizel’s Authority, Supporting Fire and Bow of Blessing first on stigmas.
- Front Damage Boost at 30% or more, and 88.1% Combat Speed with Gale Arrow.
- Might, Destruction, Wisdom, Time and Illusion as target stats.
